Responsibilities of a Health Storey Coach: Legal and Ethical Considerations for Health Coaching

Health Storey Coaches operate at the intersection of wellness and personal growth, and their responsibilities include:

  • Confidentiality: Coaches must safeguard client information and communications ensuring trust and confidentiality with their clients.
  • Informed Consent: Coaches in their coaching agreements, must obtain written consent from their clients and obtain a medical release declaring their baseline health before starting individual coaching sessions.
  • Scope of Practice: Health Storey coaches must work within an expertise they wish to develop and avoid diagnoses or treatment of medical conditions which requires medical attention. Health Storey Coaches focus on injury recovery, illness recovery, wellness and healthy lifestyle and habit formation in addition to the detoxification of the body through long term healthy living.  A Health Storey Coach focuses on improving the health baselines of their clients and assists them in achieving their health goals.
  • Referrals: Health Storey Coaches recognize when a client needs medical attention and refers them to their chosen healthcare provider for further medical assistance. Health Storey coaches are allowed by law to receive referrals and pay a referral fee only if their clients have full knowledge of the arrangement before the Health Storey coaching session begins. If Health Storey USA refers clients to a Certified Health Storey USA coach, the fee will deducted from the client coaching payments.

Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct for Health Storey Coaches

A robust code of conduct ensures that Health Storey coaches maintain professionalism and uphold ethical standards:

Integrity and Honesty: Health Storey Coaches should be truthful about their qualifications and the capabilities of coaching. Health Storey requires all health coaches to be certified in at least one other health coaching program to maintain an independent contractor designation. All Health Storey coaches are required to participate in ongoing continuing education to maintain their Health Storey Certification.

Non-Discrimination: Health Storey coaches must treat all their clients with respect, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, or other characteristics. If they are not comfortable coaching a client, it is their obligation to terminate the relationship in a professional manner.

Respect for Client Autonomy: Health Storey Clients have the right to make their own choices.  Health Storey coaches are advisory in their field and focus on supporting positive life changes.

Professional Boundaries: Maintaining appropriate boundaries is essential to foster a safe coaching environment.   

Commitment to Client Welfare: The client’s well-being should always be the primary focus.
